Test BMW 8 Series Convertible: Perfect beauty

There are vehicles that are no longer about practical considerations, but pure beauty and luxury. Among the most demanding is the now introduced 8 Series Convertible, with which BMW replaces the previous 6 Series Cabriolet. The new model name should not obscure the fact that it is a direct successor model: dimensions and space have not changed, but the price: a staggering 133 700 euros have to change hands for the BMW M850i ​​xDrive Convertible.

The bulky model designation reveals interesting details: This 8 Series is considered an M performance model, positioned between the real M models and the regular BMW types. The designation xDrive points to the standard four-wheel drive: This BMW puts its power on all four wheels on the road. And that’s a good thing, because power is available in abundance: Proud 530 hp (390 kW) makes the 4.4-liter V8 Biturbo; the maximum torque of 750 Nm is on a plateau from 1800 to 4600 rpm. A lightning-fast switching eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF is standard.

Despite more than two tons of curb weight, the new 8 Series Cabriolet gets down to business: The sprint from 0 to 100 km / h is completed in just 3.9 seconds, and the reduction at 250 km / h is far from the real possibilities of this model be distant. The total consumption is just under 10 liters per 100 kilometers, what you have to tamper with a restrained Gasfußes. And that’s not so easy – not only because the acceleration is so much fun, but also because the exhaust sound has turned out pretty aggressive.

The driver and front passenger look at an instrument panel, which – as with its predecessor – is designed very independently and stands out clearly from the old-fashioned design language of the current sedans and SUV models of the brand. Only the instrumentation has turned out little independent, and it works with their relatively large numbers not very high quality. Quite in contrast to the way to the optionally available, glazed controls that convey real luxury class flair.

The original fabric hood of the predecessor with its vertically retractable glass and two fins has given way to a more conventional solution, but works perfectly: in just 15 seconds, the top is open or closed at the push of a button, at speeds up to 50 km / h; the subsequent traffic at the suddenly changing to green traffic light will appreciate it. It’s a pity that a wind deflector is standard equipment, a pity that it leaves only an average quality impression. By the way, you can also sit in the back, an exercise that you should rather leave to children. The trunk holds at least 350 liters of luggage.

With its double wishbone front axle and five-finger rear axle, the 8 Series Cabriolet can be directed with pinpoint accuracy, while the car feels more compact than its relatively bulky dimensions suggest. The limited-slip differential even allows the professional impressive horizontal positioning.

At least as much pleasure, however, it slips along at a reduced pace, to be blown by the wind and to enjoy the appreciative or even envious glances of other road users. Who wants to push the provocation in times of diesel criticism a bit further, by the way, can also opt for the 840d xDrive convertible with its sensational 320-horsepower six-cylinder diesel. Pleasant side effect: The fuel costs should then be just over half – and the cost price drops by more than 25 000 €.

The competitive environment is ambitious: those who have the budget for a convertible convertible 8 will find alternatives in the form of E- or S-Class Cabriolets from Mercedes-Benz – or at Porsche or Maserati. As mentioned above, all of these cars are all about beauty and luxury. The BMW 8 Series Cabriolet delivers these qualities in perfect perfection.
